What can done to improve Search Engine Rankings..?

The list below outlines some of the methods you can use to improve your web site’sSearch Engine Ranking, shown in order of highest value (****) to lowest value (*)...

Web Page Titles ****

Web Page Titles that contain primary keywords is a great start to a well optimized web page... Most search engines rate Web Page Title text highly as a ranking factor... For example, the word 'Services' is not enough text for a Web Page Title... A Web Page Title needs to be more dynamic to stand out from the mass of others in the search results... Which of the following "Web Page Titles" do you think will be more effective getting a higher ranking..?

CompanyName - Services
vs.
Keyword1 and Keyword2 services in YourTown: CompanyName

Web Page Content ****

Web Page Text Content is an often under-rated part of web page search engine optimizing... A web page with little or no text content will rank poorly; what the search engine spiders really want to find on a web page is comprehensive text content that includes inbound and outbound links is...

Web Page Content Text should be informative, related to the Web Page Title with content that is logically structured and includes sub-headings and links…

There is a definite web page writing style that is different than other traditional forms of media… When writing web page text content you should include as many of the Keywords and Keyword Phases used in the web page Meta Tags… Also, don’t forget to add descriptive text to graphic "alt tag" since search engine spiders cannot index graphics...

Inbound Links ***

The number and quality of Inbound Links from other web sites will have a significant effect on your web page rankings… Popularity helps push web sites to the top of search engine rankings… This means that a web site that has links from other sites will be high up in the rankings but the web sites linking to your site should be relevant to the Web Page Content Text

It is important that the web sites linking to your site should be relevant to your Web Page Content Text and should preferably contain the same Keywords and Keyword Phases of the web page being linked to for maximum ranking impact..!

Google with its PageRank calculation uses this approach to determine a web site / page ranking…

You can see your (or any) web site’s Inbound Links using Google:
  1. In the Google search box type in a URL (YourCompany.com)
  2. Click on the link that says: Find web pages that link to (YourCompany.com)...
You will see all the sites that link to (YourCompany.com)… Just look at the search results number to get an idea of how many there are... Keep in mind that the number of results may not be accurate and will likely include multiple pages linking from the same site but you will get a good idea just how popular your web site actually is..!

In the long run other web sites will eventually link to your web site if your content is interesting, unique and relevant to them… However, actively pursuing links from other web sites is also an important part of the process to improving your web site’s ranking... There are probably many web sites in your particular market that will link to your web site…

MTG Marketing can help you seek out the important and authoritative web sites related to your web site and suggest a link exchange; contact us today to get started..!

Domains Names ***

Keyword-filled Domain Names are an interesting subject but it is difficult to "Brand" a domain name... So unless your actual business name is keyword.com you are better off to stick with your chosen domain name and work to get it recognized as a leader in its field... Consider domain name like amazon.com, adobe.com, ebay.com, google.com or microsoft.com; not a keyword domain amongst them and some of the most well known and biggest web sites on the Internet..!

Web Page Filenames **

Web Page Filename text should not to be overlooked… Use hyphens or underscores to separate the keywords in your web page filenames… This Web Page Filename is mtgm_sp_seo3.html," the Web Page Title is "MTG Marketing Consultation - Services Provided - Search Engine Optimization 3 - Contact Us at 619.889.5776" and the main heading uses the keywords " Search Engine Optimization" as well… In addition, any Inbound Links will probably contain the same keywords text…

Heading Tags **

These are the <h1>, <h2>, et.al., tags that define what level heading is in use... Starting from <h1>, each level down generally receives less ranking weight from the search engines…

On this web page our main heading "Search Engine Optimization" is set with <h2> and the sub-headings are <h3>…

Use <h1> or <h2> once only at the top of the web page and the sub-headings in the relevant places…

Meta Tags *

There are two main Meta Tags that can be relevant in "Search Engine Optimization" and they are placed at the top of the web page source code between the <head> tags:

  • <meta name="keywords" content="keyword1, keyword2, ..."
  • <meta name="keyword phrases" content="keywordphase1, ..."
  • <meta name="description" content="descriptive text..."

The Keywords / Keyword Phases Tags have been used in the past to "stuff" an excessive number of keywords into a web page... For this reason most search engines not give at best minimal weighting to these tags... If you plan to use thses tags it is probably best to choose a few pertinent keywords and keyword phases for each web page and leave it at that…

The Description Tag can be useful as it is the extended text that will often appear under the page title in the search results... You should write a short description that draws people in to your web page and expands on your Web Page Title...

For example the Description Tag on this page reads:
" MTG Marketing can show you how to optimize web sites for search engine ranking success... Learn how to use these search engine optimization techniques to your advantage…"

    Outbound Links *

Outbound Links are also important… Recently search engine spiders have started to give weight to Outbound Links that link to important web sites on the same subject as the web page being optimized...

This is a good way to help establish your web site as an "authority" especially if other optimizing techniques help to lift its ranking in the search engines…
